Bringing Your Home and Garden Into the 21st Century

Two affordable ways to improve the look of your property's exterior

If you'd like to improve the look of your property's exterior but money is a bit tight, here are a couple of things you can do which won't break the bank.

Deep-clean your carport or garage

If you have a carport or a garage, it's worth spending a few hours deep cleaning this structure, as due to its large size, it is probably one of the most noticeable features of your property's exterior. Cleaning it will cost next to nothing and will almost certainly have a positive impact on the overall appearance of the outside of your property.

Begin by focusing on the roof of the carport or garage; if you haven't cleaned this area in a long time, it will probably be covered in a substantial amount of bird droppings, leaves and dirt. The easiest way to remove this debris is to stand on a ladder and hose down the roof with a pressure washer. Make sure to use the lowest setting on this equipment, however, as too much pressure could damage the materials from which the roof is made.

Then, use a scrubbing brush and a bucket of water that contains a few drops of detergent to remove any grime and stains from the posts of your carport or the walls of your garage. If you have a carport which is made from timber, it's extremely important to make sure that you dry the wooden posts immediately after washing them, as leaving them in a damp condition for too long could result in them developing an erosive fungus called wet rot.

Repaint the exterior walls of your home

The exterior walls of a house are subjected to a lot of wear and tear; constant exposure to the elements can leave the paint on these walls cracked and stained. If this is the case with your home, it might be worth repainting these walls, as this could make an enormous difference to how your property exterior looks.

As long as you have the time and the tools to do the painting yourself, this should be a very inexpensive process. In addition to paint, you will need paintbrushes, roller brushes and a sturdy ladder which is tall enough to enable you to access the full length of each wall.

If you decide to do this, make sure to check the weather forecast before you begin. Ideally, you should do the painting during a period of mild, dry weather, when there will be no rain, wind or high humidity levels, as these types of weather conditions could have a negative impact on the end results of your efforts.
